Ascension is the process by which a mage can expand their soul in order to channel a greater quantity of mana safely. There are a number of different forms of ascensions, each of which is attained in a different manner.

A mage is capable of having a theoretically unlimited number of ascensions at any given time, however some of them are difficult to maintain and others are difficult to attain while having another ascension. For instance, it takes a good deal of effort to become an angel while still being a demon, and vice versa. The usual effect of such an attempt is ending up as one or the other, unless the proper balance is achieved between them to maintain both.

Ascensions are commonly believed to be based around different talents, although most people only know of the existence of angels and demons. Avatars are a bit less well-known than them, and the remainder of the ascensions are almost unheard-of. The latest going theory among those who know of them is that they are based upon the Major Arcana of the Elkandu Tarot, a theory that has also been applied to avatarhood.
